Poppy (lat. Papáver rhoéas) is an annual herbaceous plant, a species of poppy (Papaver) Poppy family (Papaveraceae).
Other names: field poppy, wild poppy, flower of fire.
It is herbaceous annuals, rarely perennial branching plant reaches a height of 30-80 cm.
Grown as an ornamental plant. Prefers well-drained, sandy-loamy soil and a Sunny location. Propagated by sowing seeds in spring or autumn. Showing a lot of forms and varieties, featuring a simple and double flowers, variously incised, often fringed petals, color from white to ischema-red, or entirely various kinds of pattern and edging.
As a medicinal plant poppy, Samosata was used already in Ancient Egypt for 1100 years B.C. ; beautifully preserved flowers are kept in the Museum in Cairo. Currently in scientific medicine is not used. In national medicine apply tea from the petals of plants for the relief of coughing, and when the state of anxiety in young children. A decoction with milk is used in measles and diseases of the bladder, and also in dysentery and diarrhea in children, with honey — against heavy sweating. Infusion used to treat various kinds of pains and as a sedative.
The fresh plant is considered slaboyadovitym but the daily use of infusion of dried petals of poppy Samoseiko can be considered safe, since unlike poppy sleeping pills it does not contain substances such as morphine and papaverine.
The dried petals, containing the pigment, can be used to color syrups and wines.
